Cefyn's Review - 11th sept

We had no problems using the Riu points to pay the room charges.

The room safe was 14.00e for the week.

A large (0.4l) Spanish beer was 3.95e. Watch what you ask for because the German beer was 6e. If you asked for a beer, you might get the more expensive one!

A small bottle of water was 1.85e, coke 2.20e and an average cocktail price was 7.35e.

The room mini-bar was around 20 cents more expensive per item than the bar prices, but we just emptied the fridge and went to the Mercado over the road and filled it with our own, 9.50e for a litre of Smirnoff (cheaper than duty-free).

They have free Wifi in the reception/lounge areas; you just have to ask reception for the pass key. We found that the coverage was very good around the patio and lounge areas, even down to the nearest side of the pool area. You did lose the connection towards the function room area of the patio/pool area though.

We had a great time in this hotel, the service was as you would want, couldn’t do enough for you. The meals were very good, plenty of choices (even on the speciality nights, we had a Moroccan night and I enjoyed everything on offer!!).

The only down point of the holiday was ……. Playa Del Ingles. We have been there 3 times in the past, the last time was about 8 years ago, but this time we found the place to be a little tired to say the least. The commercial centres, Yumbo, Kasbar etc are really run down and a little sleazy if you know what I mean.

We took a taxi to Meloneras, by the Faro lighthouse, on the last day and found this resort to be a little more civilised and what we would prefer. However, the reviews on this hotel are better than the ones over there?

At the end of the day we went away for a relaxing break to recharge and this is what we got at the Riu Palace Maspalomas, no kids running around the place, no animation team dragging you into silly pool games. By the way we have no problem at all with the activities at any of the previous Riu’s we have been to, we have often joined in with the French boules etc, it was just nice to relax by the pool and chill for the week.

If you fancy a good trip out we can recommend the Island Delights Premium VIP tour. You travel in 8 seater buses which are connected together via a CB radio, so everyone hears the same commentary. The guide on the tour was a cockney called Garry and he was just a brilliant funny guy with a vast knowledge of information. To cap it all off, the meal included in the trip was the best we have had on any of these tours.

Pros: food,service, relaxation, quality
Cons: location (being picky)

Not visited this site for a while (since about 2008/9 if I'm honest) but have to comment on this hotel as it's where I was first introduced to Riu.
We have been twice now, once in 2007 as a couple and once in 2010 as a four along with my dad and mum (mum suffers from a disability).
On both occaisions we were very, very impressed with everything from the rooms to service, food, attention to detail and the helpfulness of everyone at the hotel.
We too found it a little isolated but it's not too far from either "town" or Melonares but as above the quality of the hotel outweighs that minor niggle.
If you want a hotel/pool/beach holiday and want to feel that you are their only customer and concern go to this hotel, it still rates as the best hotel I've stayed in...period.
Recently we have stayed in the Riu Cancun (persuaded by our experience at the Palace Gran Canaria) + the Atlantis Dubai, Moon Palace Cancun among other resonably high end establishments but have still not experience the level of customer service we get at the RP GC.....Riu Cancun was pretty good and did just edge the Moon Palace but this place is special in my opinion.

Looking to stay in Europe again in 2013, fance the Balearics if poss...any ideas folks?
