Description: In the heart of Playa del InglÚs, in the south of the sunny island of Gran Canaria, stands the Hotel Riu Waikiki, with 3 stars. An ideal destination for those who love sun and sea, and one where they can enjoy the particularly friendly, personal service that characterises all Riu hotels.

Pros: Many sunbeds, beautiful food, clean.
Cons: Limited food choice, no air con, no last meal!

When we arrived at 1.30am, we were greeted by smiling reception staff who were very friendly and helpful the whole holiday, and as usual, quick to ask their maintenance to fix problems (we had experience of this!).

We were asked to wear a wristband as is common in most hotels now, however when the man saw how distraught I was, he put mine around my bracelet so I wouldn't get a tan line!!

Our rooms, though very clean, had a few drawbacks - no air con, a fan that did, well, not much for us! and single beds pushed together (which ste kept falling down the middle of!) Being on the third floor however, we were lucky as we could leave our balcony door open to let air in.

Breakfast had the usual choices, continental, cereals, meat and cheese, fried foods etc, and quality was beautiful. The restaurant had a fair choice at lunchtime however the poolside bar served only toasties, chips, hotdogs, burgers and pizzas which are easy to get fed up of.
The evening meal quality was top rate, everything was beautiful, however I did not feel there was as much choice as their could have been.

The entertainment team were lievely and friendly, and did not push you to do things, however there was not one spaniard among them!! They did the usual daytime activities - water polo, water aerobics, beach volleyball, football, table tennis, bingo, shooting, etc. The evening entertainment was fun, the team performed 5 times a week and got outside acts in on Weds and Suns. The bar was downstairs, and air conditioned, but if you didn't get down early for a good seat then you wouldn't be able to see well as the structure poles tend to get in the way!

The pool bar upstairs had lots of seats but some poeple would just lounge on the sunbeds having a chat. The bad part was that, come midnight, you were asked to leave either to go out of the hotel or back to your room, they did not like anyone on the terrace after 12pm. I did not like this, felt that I was a child being told to go to bed!

The pool was always kept throroughly clean and maintenance were filling in paint cracks everynight to keep it looking top standard. It had two shallow ends and was deep in the middle, which is a nice change from many of the pools which are the same depth the whole way through.

This hotel (as with many others, we were lead to believe) does not give you your last meal (you are only entitled to 13 nights worth) so we went to a British bar around the corner whose food was beautiful.

Also, in G.C. it is cheaper to fly early in the morning (our flight was 00.40) but you have to check out at 11am on day of departure! I requested to keep my room, which was granted, for $50 Euros. We met a couple over there and split the cost so that all of us could use our room to shower and change after a day by the pool - it was well worth it!!

All in all I enjoyed my holiday, I saw couples young and old, families big and small, groups of guys and girls, the lot, so it was definitely a place that appealed to everyone!! I would recommend this as a nice getaway, but you definitely get more for your money further afield!
