Just returned from a 5 night 6 day vacation to RIU Montego bay. I have only experienced the RIUs in Puerto Plata so thats what Im basing my comparison on.
Very short drive from airport which was awesome.
Check in was smooth even though I had issues with my reservation from the company that I booked through. The head reception guy was Alberto from the Bachata.
They even sent me a fruit plate because they felt my check in took too long. While I waited I was offered a drink or two.
Was in block 2 which was a garden view but as soon as I came out of my build, there was the spa/gym and the pool and to my right the beach.....couldnt have had a better placement.
Room was simple - huge king size bed - which was one bed not two together. Full fridge and bar per usual.
House keeping was done timely every day.
Animation - well there is one in every bunch that tries to get a little to close, if you know what I mean, and he happened to be Dominican. There was staff from other countries as well.
They did a great Michael Jackson. The other shows where the same ones that I have seen over the years.
The team was very involved with guests during day. Ping pong, volleyball bocca, darts.
The pools were large enough and lots of sun loungers.
Wasn't a fan of the beach and didn't spend any time there.
The bar staff were great, my glass was never empty. That was for all the bars.
The only problem that I could see was there were tons of bees around the pool bar and I know a number of people got stung. Not sure what that was about.
The air planes do fly right over the resort a number of times during the day but it didn't bother me as I live by an airport at home.
Ooh just about for got - food....nothing to write home about except the jerk chicken. The same foods as the DR resorts but the wait staff were great.
Over all I would go back for sure.

Pros: Clean - Friendly staff
Cons: Beach

Hi All,
We returned from Riu Montego Bay a couple of weeks ago. We arrived to the resort in the morning, check in was easy, we were greeted with a smile and a rum punch cocktail. We had booked a suite with ocean view, that's what we were given in building 5, third floor. It was mid 80s and rained everyday around 3:30 -4pm (nap time).
We were able to make reservations (to the left of check in there is a dinner reservations desk) to all 3 specialty restaurants, Kalu - Asian buffet style; Little Italy - buffet style for appetizers, entree is a la carte; Mahoe Bay Grill - buffet style for appetizers, entree is a la carte; Rose Hall - for breakfast and dinner both buffet style, 3 nights were themed, Mexican, Chef's choice and Jamaican. Not all restaurants were open every evening, the specialty restaurants alternated evenings, and the beach lunch hut was closed. You can get a late night snack at Rose Hall or Little Italy. I believe this is because the resort was not at full capacity.
It's true about the beach, once you get knee deep you find yourself in seaweed, it's a squishy slimy feeling , hubby said it felt like the floor of a lake; no problem finding sun beds there were plenty available, pool area is large.
At check in you are given a map of the resort and a list of the week's entertainment which is very helpful (we did not get this at the Riu Palace Macao). The nightly entertainment was good it is themed Grease, Around the World, etc. Most days you would find them practicing on stage not interacting with the guests (I am comparing this to the Riu Palace Macao where the entertainment never pushy encouraged guests to participate in volley ball, pool volley ball, darts etc).
The resort is spotless and most of the staff are very friendly; there are a few things that we did not like - no top shelve liquor, we did not know who our housekeeper was, we tried to find out but never found anyone to ask (unlike the RPM were a little note card informed us that Ramona was our HK and we saw her daily). We saw people without wrist bands, especially the evenings and one evening we saw the police question and arrest a man who had snuck on the resort; we were at Little Italy for dinner and by the time we went to get dessert they had removed some of the pastries (possible for the 9pm seating), the food was a bit repetitive the fruit selection was poor only bananas and oranges were consistent. One thing that I found disheartening is the amount of food that is thrown away, we saw staff throwing away food that was left over from dinner. There has to be somewhere to donate it.
Overall we had a relaxing vacation, I don't know if we would return to this resort we would like to try the one in Negril.
Any questions please contact me.
Cheers!!
