Pros: All were positive
Cons: None negative

My husband, son and I just returned form Riu Tropical Bay on Tuesday. We stayed 5 nights as arranged by our travel agent. It was my sons High School Graduation trip and the three of us enjoyed the resort immensely! Here are my takes on various aspects of the resort:

Food: The food was great. I am not an adventurous eater as much as my husband and son. We primarily ate at the buffet except for one night at Sir Anthony's. My advice, stick to the buffet! Sir Anthony's was good but not as much in terms of selection. I personally loved the pizzaria and the jerk hut!

Rooms: Very clean and well maintained! We'd read about the rooms being somewhat musty. I can say that this was the case in a very minor way -- light a candle and enjoy the tropics! Each time we asked for anything it was taken care of. Extra towels, pillows, blankets, Pepsi and Diet Pepsi -- you name it!

Beach: Gorgeous beach! Best on that side of the island if you ask me! Never too crowded to get a lounge chair or three, shade or sunny! Snorkeling on the beach is limited but there are fish, stingrays and crabs to be seen if you choose.

Overall Resort: Great impression. The staff were very friendly and courteous! We had actually grabbed someone elses bag in the Airport and were helped greatly between Tina with GoGo Tours and the front desk!

Spa: Had a one hour massage that was OUTSTANDING!

Pool: Never too crowded but had a funny smell (rubbery?) I guess because of the chemicals they use but very nice!

Entertainment: Always something going on! Nighttime entertainment was very enjoyable!

Pros: Great Beach!!

We spent 5 days at RIU TB in July 2006 and loved every minute!

Once you get through the airport - ask for Juta Tours and catch the tour bus to Negril. Hint - the Montego Bay Juta is different from the Negril Juta, so you may want to purchase the return ticket from the Negril office. We booked (and paid for) both trips at airport and then had to wait 45 minutes to be picked up for the return trip. If we would have booked the return through the Negril Juta, they would have given us a better time for pickup.

We booked an Oceanfront room and were put in bldg 6. Oceanfront was definitely worth the extra money. Was wonderful to wake up and see the sand and ocean! Building 6 was a great location. It was very quiet as we were on the side toward RIU bldgs and had a clear view of beach and ocean without anyone walking past room (other bulidings have sidewalk in front of oceanview rooms). Room was clean - didn't seem overly musty. There is no fan in the bathroom, so bringing an airfreshener was a wise choice. Loved having the fridge stocked with water and beverages! We brought insulated water bottles and had ice and water on the beach - with a number of trips for other beverages to the bar involved too. Got to stay hydrated! Smile

We booked snorkel and Rick's cafe tours through the Dive Shop. We enjoyed both! The even got to check out the other hotels from the water and think RIU TB is in the best location! Had fun seeing Hedonism from about 50 yards out - glad we didn't get closer as there were a lot of "striped" bodies - (being naked shows a lot of white butts!). We rented a taxi from the hotel to go shopping. Yes, we paid more than we would have if we would have walked down to the street, but the driver was great and took us to a number of locations and was always waiting for us at the time stated - so was probably worth the extra couple dollars. When we got caught in a downpour shopping at the craft market he even came back early in case we didn't want to brave the rain.

We did not exchange any money into Jamaican - used US dollars with no problems. We even got US dollars back in change when shopping at the craft market.

Calls to US - we bought a calling card from the hotel gift shop ($14 US for 27 minutes). The lady at the gift shop told us about the $1US connection fee for each call from the hotel when we purchased the card. Turns out each call had a $5US fee.

The beach was beautiful!!!! Chairs were always available. Water was crystal clear and bathwater warm. Loved "floating" in the saltwater.

The food was good! We liked the buffet better than the specialty resturants. The jerk chicken was great and the bloody bay lunch and negril buffet areas had more than enough great food to choose from. Loved the fruit and basic choices for breakfast - loved having eggs cooked to order! We miss all the fresh fruit and unique smoothies.

We checked out a couple of the shows - not bad. Otherwise we spent most of the days on the beach and nights just kicking back at the bar or resturant.

This was our first experience with a all-inclusive and our first trip to Jamaica. We would recommend the RIU Tropical Bay and Jamaica to friends and family.
