This is our first trip to DR. Our family consist of 2 adults and 2 teen boys
(16-18). Will teens be safe unsupervised at night? Is it necessary to exchange US $ for pesos? Any advice to offer regarding things we shouldn't miss? Any suggestions on having morning coffee in the room? Which 2 rooms should we request? Is it possible we will see migrating whales? Can anyone recommend a reliable/honest tour guide? Thanks so much!
PS Rudy, I am taking school supplies.

well i am sure you will all enjoy your trip and you will all be catered for with the entertainment. yea the teens will be fine if they are unsupervised at night unless they go out the resort which is really unlikely, they can visit all three hotels in the resort so if you dont like one nights entertainment at a night or even during the day you can go to the other hotel and see what that offers for you. i would reccomend taking pesos as you get a better deal with them, but the us$ are good for tipping the staff. i would reccomend to watch the micheal jackson and grease show at night they are fab and to look out for the beach/pool parties during the day they are cool too, also i would advise you to take part in activities they are fun Exclamation you cant really have a coffee in your room (atleast you couldnt in the merengue - which is on the resort) the only drinks you can have is alcoholic, pepsi and water. but if you go to the restaurant they have all the drinks you will need in the morning. i cant help with the rooms but i am sure someone else will (most likely mambo-bad-girl she loves the hotel), i dont really know about the whales i never saw any when i was there but you can see dolphins at ocean world. It will be best to take the activities that the travel reps offer they are good, also the trips that the water sports centre offer are good aswel Exclamation Hope you have a great trip and hope what i said helps you Laughing Laughing

Hi wolffpak2 - welcome aboard

The visitors to Mexico who want coffee in the room get a volunteer from the family to go get an insulated jug of it from the restaurant ... I don't know if this would apply in the DR - it might be worth trying.

Many people take something like a 20oz bubba mug (I believe WalMart sell these in the US) for beers, iced water etc. around the pools and on the beach - during the day these drinks are normally served in 10oz ??? thin walled beakers similar to the ones you get from the dispenser at a water cooler.

If you want something particular about the rooms, send an email to the resort saying what you'd like (quite, low floor, near the beach) - they'll try to match your wishes with what they have available on the day.

One thing you can do now is to go to www.riu.com and get a riuclass card - they will email you a card to print for this trip and a proper one comes later. The card gets you discounts at the resort - quote the card number in your email and show the card when you hand in your accommodation vouchers at the resort. (remember when applying for the card Riu is a European company and we Europeans do dates dd/mm/yy)

Well ya'll will have a fabulous time. Your teens are fine at night unsupervised, or during the day left unsupervised. I am 16 and I went with my brother 14 and my sister 11..At night we would sit by ourselves and watch the show and we were always by ourselves during the day while our parents were on the beach...no worries there...

I would reccomend a top floor room...its more private and nice !!! Cant help you with a room number either cause I was at the Merengue, however Im sure someone will be able to help.

I would reccomend US dollars for tipping...you can buy thigns from the shops and the market with either pesos or us dollars, whatever you prefer...

When we went, we took 52 oz. Bubba Mugs and had one full of ice from the bars then we just kept refilling our drinks with the ice and drink mix we had in the room.

Things not to miss:
- The beach party and Caribean street parties are really fun. THe Caribean street parties have all 3 hotels...
- if you like, the daily activities (you win and you get rum or coffee)

Hope you have a great vacation !!! Clapping

Cheers
